She graduated and completed her neurosurgical training at the Düsseldorf University Hospital. After that she subspecialized in Pediatric Neurosurgery and established a Pediatric Neurosurgery Section at Düsseldorf University Hospital. She became a consultant in General Neurosurgery with important clinical focus on the fields of: microsurgery, pediatric neurosurgery, neurovascular, neuroendoscopy and hydrocephalus. Since 2007 she is the head of Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Asklepios Childrens Hospital Sankt Augustin (teaching hospital of Semmelweis University, Campus Hamburg) and director of the interdisciplinary surgical center (ZeKON).

She was the coordinator of a statewide research-project on lumbar disc herniations and leader of a research- and working group in clinical and scientific fields of pediatric neurosurgery, hydrocephalus and pathologies of CSF spaces (major interests: brain tumors, dysraphic disorders, gravitational valves and neuroendoscopy). Since 2007 she works on scientific projects on craniosynostosis, hydrocephalus, occult and open spinal dysraphism, CVJ pathologies and is initiator and coordinator of German Pediatric Neurosurgery Course (Section Pediatric Neurosurgery of the DGNC).

She passed the written certification examination of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies in September 1995 and she participated in numerous training courses such as training course of the German Society for Endoscopic Neurosurgery and Neuronavigation with qualification certificate. In 2004 she was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the Working Group Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (ASbH) and in 2006 she was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Syringomyelia and Chiari Malformation Association (DSCM) and to the Pediatric Neurosurgery Committee of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS). She was a Member of the Examination Committee of the EANS, Direction of the oral Exam from 2004 to 2013.

Since 1988 is a Member of the Commission for Quality Assurance of the German Society for Neurosurgery (DGNC), leadership of several work groups within the Commission and since 1999 she was a part in the development of guidelines. In 2003 was elected as chairwoman of the German Society of Neurosurgery and a Member of the extended executive committee of the German Society of Neurosurgery (DGNC).
